About Dimitris:
Dimitris Gkoulimaris is a doctoral student in ethnomusicology at the University of Texas at Austin, researching the musical practices of Greece, Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean, with a secondary focus on the music of Latin America. He holds a BA in Music Composition and Popular Music Studies from Northwestern University.
Dimitris is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, and sound engineer. In 2016, he received a degree in classical percussion from the municipal conservatory of Thermi, Greece, and has since shifted his focus to the guitar and lute-family instruments of the eastern Mediterranean, such as oud, buzuq, and lute/lavta. A gigging musician since the age of 12, Dimitris is currently a member of UT’s Middle Eastern Ensemble “Bereket” and Hispanic Caribbean Ensemble, while he also performs with Shams Band and other groups in Austin’s vibrant international music scene.
